Cuban City Suspends Carnival amid Concerns about Dengue, Cholera Latin American Herald Tribune August 6, 2015
HAVANA – The eastern Cuban city of Holguin has suspended its annual Carnival, scheduled for Aug. 20-23, in an effort to stop the spread of cholera and dengue fever, official media said Thursday.
The decision to suspend the celebration comes from “the need to increase the hygiene and sanitary campaign to palliate the complex epidemiological situation in the municipality,” Ahora newspaper said, citing a source in the Holguin provincial parliament.
The provincial government said Carnival will not begin until “the hygiene and epidemiological situation is stabilized,” urging the population to cooperate with efforts to confront the situation.
The article did not mention the number of confirmed cases of cholera or dengue in the city.
About 450 specialists from throughout Holguin province have been deployed to the city, with some of them at work carrying out aerial fumigation targeting the mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever.
Pope Francis is scheduled to make a stop in Holguin during his Sept. 19-22 visit to Cuba.
