Efe Denies Reporting on a “Self-Coup” by Venezuela’s Maduro Latin American Herald Tribune/EFE March 6, 2015
MADRID – Agencia Efe on Friday denied having sent out any reports on a supposed “self-coup” staged by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and has notified authorities in Venezuela of its surprise at some statements made by the president in this regard.
In an address delivered on Thursday, the Venezuelan president said: “And the stupid people at Agencia Efe, that’s how I’m going to put it, are saying that Maduro, that is, me, son of Chavez, wants to stage a coup against myself so that, after staging the coup against myself, I can suspend the elections, because the opposition is supposedly going to sweep the elections.”
Efe’s management on Friday communicated to Venezuelan authorities its total surprise at these statements, which have no basis in any story written by the Agency, whose reporters are required to uphold the strictest standards of impartiality and objectivity.
“Agencia Efe does not meddle in any way in the Venezuelan political debate, which corresponds to the sovereign Venezuelan people,” the Agency’s management made clear in a conversation with Venezuelan Ambassador to Spain Mario Isea.
“As soon as we saw it, we realized that someone had without a doubt been misinforming President Maduro,” Agencia Efe management said.
