Where is Ángel Santiesteban-Prats? A political prisoner cannot just disappear. By Eva Belfrage August 24, 2014
Since the 21st of July the Cuban writer Angel Santiesteban has 'disappeared' from his political imprisonment in the Lawton Prison Settlement in Havana. The independent Cuban web daily,14yMedio, informed that they had received information from the police, that Ángel had tried to escape from prison, had been transferred to a police interrogation station in Havana and had been visited by his daughter at the station. But nobody has confirmed this to be true.
His sister in Miami considers an escape attempt as very unlikely and probably a set up for prolonging his prison term. In the first months of his imprisonment he was offered by the authorities to be released if he was prepared to leave the country, which he refused. Therefore an escape attempt seems very unlikely.
Last week the independent journalist Lilianne Ruiz wrote in Cubanet that she had tried to find out if indeed Angel was at the police interrogation station, but she was not able to get any accurate information.
Now 14yMedio says that Ruiz has informed them that Angel Santiesteban might have been transferred to the Lima prison (where he was confined in the beginning of his imprisonment). But this is also not confirmed and can only be considered as rumours as long as there is no direct sign that Angel Santiesteban is alive.
What is really happening to Angel Santiesteban and why will the authorities not give out official information about his location and present status?
Cubademocraciayvida.org demands proof that Angel Santiesteban is alive and well.
